Beach Hair Tips You Should Care About

Whether or not you are going on a vacation or just living your best South Florida life, I can solidly bet on there being some time spent in the surf and sand. Before you pack up and head out for some fun in the sun you may want to evaluate your hair routine, here are some of our best tips to protect your hair from the salt water and sun!

There is good and bad that comes with salt water and your tresses. While the saltwater is great for your scalp by helping to soothe and purify the skin and can give your hair a great tousled, messy texture, it can also be a touch drying to your hair. To prevent post beach breakage, try applying an oil like YOUNG.AGAIN oil from Kevin Murphy after you take a dip to offset the drying effects of the salt water. Another great option to keep in your beach bag is UN.TANGLED leave-in conditioner. This lightweight spray packs major hydration without weighing you down.

A little sun won’t hurt, or will it? We all know that sunscreen is paramount to protecting our skin, but what about our hair? One day at the beach here and there won’t hurt, but if you are spending a lot of time in the sun and the sand you need to protect your color! Being in the sun oxidizes your hair and skin, but if you color your hair it has already been oxidized through the process of coloring it. Being outside in the sun for long periods of time will accelerate the oxidizing of color treated hair so you need to protect it the way you would the rest of your body. One of the easiest things that you can do is to apply a conditioning mask or leave-in before heading out to the beach. By coating your hair with a moisturizing conditioner you are creating a barrier between your stands and the sun, which aids in preventing fading. The other bonus of doing this is that you are essentially doing a deep conditioning treatment with heat until you rinse it out. It really is a win/win for your hair!

If you want to double up on moisture after your time in the surf, a great option is to add a few drops of oil to your cleanser when you wash your hair post dip to remove any leftover salt. After that initial wash, don’t just dive back into your normal washing routine just yet, salt is quite alkaline, so in order to balance out the pH of your hair again you need to use more acidic cleanser or conditioner to neutralize the alkalinity. One of our favorites is RE.STORE repairing cleaning treatment, it is a cream cleanser that doubles as a treatment and is incredibly restorative.

After you get out of the shower, don’t grab a comb but instead reach for your boar bristle brush! This is one of the easiest ways to prevent breakage as the natural bristles are more flexible and won’t snap your hair. The boar bristles also massage and smooth the hairs cuticle while distributing natural oils from your scalp giving the hair more luster and shine.
